Coworking Is Good For Your Health

If you’re not a “People Person” you may want to re-think your life choices. A 2017 New York Times article featured several eye-opening studies revealing the benefits of social interaction.

One such report that began in 1965 and featured a study of 7,000 men and women concluded that “people who were disconnected from others were roughly three times more likely to die during the nine-year study than people with strong social ties,” as recounted in the book Healthy at 100. Perhaps the most interesting finding in this study was the fact that the difference in survival happened regardless of factors such as age, gender or health practices as one might suspect. In fact, those who had close social ties in addition to unhealthy factors such as smoking, obesity or lack of exercise still lived longer than people with healthier lifestyles and poor social ties.

Another 1984 study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that out of 2,320 men who survived a heart attack those who had strong connections with others had only a quarter the risk of death than their counterparts.

There are several more studies throughout the article that confirm similar findings. A Harvard Women’s Health Watch posted in 2010 sums the benefits of human connection up perfectly in stating, “Dozens of studies have shown that people who have satisfying relationships with family, friends and their community are happier, have fewer health problems, and live longer.”

As work trends move towards a more fluid and even gig-based economy, the threat of isolation is a real concern. While we’re becoming more connected than ever digitally, human connections are taking a backseat, which can have long lasting effects on our health and over all well-being.

There are some things that can be done to remedy shutting oneself out from social interaction. Joining clubs and organizations can be a great way to network and build relationships. At 3411 Coworking, we strive to provide our members with a meaningful community atmosphere via a variety of events each month in addition to our open and welcoming office space.

Our weekly Group Lunch is an excellent way to catch up with your neighbors. We also host regularly scheduled Lunch & Learn events that focus on a variety of relevant topics as well as Happy Hours and the occasional cookout.

At 3411 Coworking, we're always looking for new and exciting experiences to share with our members. This month we'll be touring a nearby brew pub and sampling some delicious craft beer as well as getting a good stretch with 'Yoga and Yogurt' an early morning yoga session accompanied by a yogurt parfait breakfast bar.
